Help diy over flow

Okay so I've seen the DIY over flow by the Joey guy on YouTube an I was wondering will the overflow automatically match the speed (gph) that is coming from my return or am I gonna have to match my return with my over flow speed?

If its syphon-based, youll need to match them. If its simply an open overflow that allows water to drain, it will take whatever water comes into it (short of going over the maximum flow rate)
