How much to clean

I clean the algae off my glass (3 of the six faces only) every few days and was wondering if it is necessary to clean my surface skimmer that feeds water to the sump as well.

It is a clear acrylic box about 3" by 4" by 6" and it gets pretty covered in algae, too. Should this be taken out and cleaned? I notice the skimmer at the LFS is covered in red/purple stuff. Should I just let mine go and eventually get like that?

I clean any algae off my overflow with the exception of coraline, I do not remove the overflow to do it I just use a toothbrush and brush it off, too much algae will build up and reduve the flow of your overflow.

I have a cousin named Coraline, but I'm sure this is different.
