Kaudern's Cardinal

So I'm stocking my new tank in my head even though i don't have physical possession of it yet. I was looking at Kaudern's Cardinals. Does anyone have any experience with them, and how many do you think is good for a school?

I have 3, they are a very nice fish. But, from my understanding, you dont really want a "school", you would want a "harem"...one male only.

I haven't researched any thing in depth yet, still kicking around ideas. Is there an easy way to tell male from female with them?
