Lights needed for cycling process?

Do I need to have a lighting system in place to cycle my tank? I ordered my light a few days ago and it should be here long before I start adding anything but I was wondering if it's truly necessary for cultivating beneficial bacteria.

No lights are needed for the cycle. It will just grow algae.

I agree with carey... no lights needed to cycle the tank, all lights do is grow algae and rack up the electric bill, I would not turn them on until you have fish
