It's so true, but in this hobby, you need to learn to have it. It's the difference of success and failure (as well as a couple of zeros after the $ invested) ... It's worth it.
 
What did you ever decide about the water. You need to use RO or RO/DI water. As a worker at a large water municipality you need to worry about more then just Chlorine. There are several compounds added to drinking water to make it safe for us but bad for our reefs. Things like nitrates, phosphates, silicates, chlorine, ammonia and other heavy metals that over time will be a ticking time bomb that will end up in a crash. Seen it happen many times.
