questions about algae

ok, so this may be a stupid question but I cant seem to find an answer anywhere. So, here is goes...

Is there a difference between saltwater algae and freshwater algae? More specifically, will freshwater algae survive in a saltwater tank and vice-versa??

Algae will be the same as freshwater (diatom, green, hair, etc...). But in the salt water world, there is also Macro algae which is either good or sometimes bad.
