at first he was at the top of the tank from the time i got him, til a day later. ever since then he has been resting on the bottom. starting today i have seen him swim up to the top and gasp for air, then go straight back to the bottom.
i dont know what to do :(

Dinosaur bichirs are bottome dwellers meaning they stay on the bottom of the tank most of the time.

i understand that, but what would cause him to jolt up to the top? is that normal?

yea, i have a bala shark and a red tailed shark and pleco, they all get along fine and mind there own business.
how big are yours mgamer?

I don't know if it is to late, but this is very normal. They are similar to African dwarf frogs in the sense that they jolt to the top of the tank to grab some air then go back to the bottom.
