I have 10 ember tetra. For the past few days I’ve only been able to count 9, and was wondering where the other one was. Last night I saw the 10th one come out from behind one of my plants with a massively inflated white belly and gasping for air. The fish is now struggling and laying on it’s side. It has just occurred to me that this is the fish that I noticed had a couple of black dots on it’s side, which I noticed shortly after I had my tetra about 6 weeks back.. I didn’t do anything about this due to the affected fish acting the same as the others. I’m also a new hobbyist so inexperience plays a part here!

I have attached a few pictures.

Does anyone know what this illness might be, just in case it spreads to my other fish and I can then try to treat them? Is there anyway of treating this guy?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I would remove the infected fish ,euthanize and watch others closely .
It could be an individual case of bloat or a bacterial issue.
Some bacterial issues only infect weak fish so sometimes not all others are at risk.
Keep your water fresh and clean.

I would definitely try to save the fish in a seperate qt tank and keep a close eye on everything else
