What are these white patches on my betta's face?

This is Ghost and he is relatively new and he has white on his face. I think it might be spreading- not sure- and it's mostly on that side.

He's active, he's eating, a sizable portion of his fins are white so I'm not sure if the white on his face is actually a problem or he just looks like that and I didn't notice right away.

Might it be a fungal infection? Would giving him medicine for that be harmful if it isn't?

He's in a 5 gallon tank, all by himself.

Hi, would be great to confirm if just a colour change or an infection before any treatments. Ime some treatments can be a bit harsh.
