Featherduster?

O iv had this in my tank for a while. I think its a featherduster because of the hard stem, however i have never seen it come out and "fan out" like i know featherdusters do. Are there any types of featherdusters that dont have crowns? Or is this not what i think it is.. Ill post a picture when i get home

And it always looks like this. Day and night. Its about half a centimeter and grew from nothing. Used to be dead rock
