3D styrofoam backgrounds

Does anyone know of a reason why every post in this forum and elsewhere on the net always uses some form of concrete to cover styrofoam backgrounds? I understand sealing the styrofoam to prevent pieces small bits and pieces from floating around the aquarium. Is it a weight issue because there are a multitude of ways to weight backgrounds without covering in concrete?

Ive seen it done multiple ways. To me the concrete doesnt look as fake and iz easy to work with. Weight has nothing to do with it

The concrete is just for realistic look and to cover seams and layers between styrofoam it is a nice touch if you have the patients to do it right. Good luck keep us posted on your outcome
