DIY Prefilter?

I have 2 Maxijet 900 PH's in my 29gal. I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for a sort of prefilter to put on these. I already use the intake grate that was included, but would like to add some sort of prefilter. I just don't see the sense in paying $6 for 2 little pieces of foam!

Any and all Ideas welcomed!

$6 for two is cheap!! I would take it.

If not, you could use filter floss that you wrap around the intake, or other kind of sponges as long as they are NEW and unused.
