Building my own canister filter out of a 5 gallon bucket. got my plans all together and figured out how to fix a few problems i have seen in other DIY canister filters.
the thing I don't really know is how many GPH is enough. I want to replace all my HOB filters and this be the only one. SO with a 55 gallon FW tank how many GPH is necessary? .

Depends on what you are keeping in your tank. Goldfish & big cichlids, & other "dirty" fish, the recommendation is 8-10x turn over per hr for the filter - ie 400-500 gph.

You can prob go down to 300 gph or so for lighter bioload tanks.
