Making my own sump!

I've read it in a lot of places.... Apparently it absorbs water when wet for long periods and expands a little.
 
Also the extra heat from the water makes it expand since most tanks are kept at 80 degrees rather than the cooler temps in the stores.
 
I need direction I'm building my 20L this weekend. So far I got 10-10-10. 10 on my refugium and the bubblers out of the other sections. So 7.75 on my intake and 8.75 on my return.

Do you think the smaller the space the faster the water is moving = fewer micro bubbles?
