I think you said that already, I'm sorry! What is the best place to buy fluorite? I have done some looking around and thought it was a little pricier than I would like.
 
It is expensive i paid $45 dollars for a bag it can be mixed with other natural gravel and still be effective but still that doesn't make it cheaper it only spreads it out. There are ways to make your own substrates but I have never done it. Another option is to used root fertilizer, I have some tanks with river gravel and sand mix as well. I find I don't fertilize as often with the flourite, some plants don't need as much fertilizer as well there are plenty of undemanding plants you can use
 
A few boxes of seachem root tabs and a hammer will net you the same effect.
I agree, but for the price of 3 boxes of root tabs you might as well buy the flourite media
