If anything it makes it more interesting, things are often boring without a challenge!

The only phosphate test they had was like almost $40 at my lfs so I'm going to have to take a sample back to them to test. I guess in the meantime I'm patiently scrubbing it away

I just checked Amazon Prime and the API Phosphate test kit is $7.99

It wasn't api they were out of api and only had salifert brand left. :/

Well I found an old salifert phosphate test amongst the 180 salvage scraps and if it's right I've almost certainly found my problems 40ppm kh, 180+gh, 7.6ph (did a w/c earlier today with "liquid rock"),

Edit: 7.6 didn't seem like it could be possible so I retested and got a 7.2 result and the phosphates were a 0.5ppm. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all 0ppm.

Turns out not enough co2 is my issue, with ph being so high it's hard to get enough co2, is what my lfs expert said. Also it's hard to determine what "bright yellow" is on the API tests, so I could have given completely inaccurate kh readings.
