Ok. So I it only lasts a few months, than how can I grow anubias on it?

Look at mopani wood in the reptile section at petsmart. You have to treat it yourself, but it's only 10 bucks!
 
Is it safe for fish? Btw here a pick of the tree the branch came from.

I think that if it is a hardwood like oak, hickory, etc. then it should be fine. Yes it will rot, so I would be on the look out, but I don't think it will happen fast enough to show an ammonia spike if the tank is established. I would bleach it, boil it, or bake it to be almost certain that it is free of unwated pests.
