I'm looking to a planted tank for a 34 gallon cube I was given.... I'm currently in the planning/research stages and was wondering the thoughts of others on the substrate needed? Should I try to mix my own, buy premixed/prepackaged if what is the recommended brand, amount (20x20x20 tank). Any information or help will be greatly appreciated.

Eco Complete or Floramax are good substrates. For low tech planted tanks, sand is okay. There's usually a substrate for all types of budgets, some better than others (depending on how you look at it).

I do a organic dirt with sand or a fine gravel cap.

May the force be with you.
