Found a few things on line that suggest this is not too uncommon in planted tanks. The suggestion is that it is debris from food and decaying plants and that it can be hard to get rid of. A few people suggested more floss in the filter to try to catch it and otherwise, keep doing what we are doing (pwc and careful siphoning). I did see one suggestion to try to blast it off the plants with a turkey baster or something so as to let the leaves continue to get light.

Thanks. I cleaned the tank out today and removed that centerpiece. I rinsed the gravel and soaked it boiling hot water to make sure I got anything living in it. I even went as far as gently wiping every leaf off to remove all that gunk. It was a long drawn out process but everything is clean now. The only thing that didn't really get a good scrub Down was my filter. I didn't mess with that simply because I don't want to re-cycle this tank. So now all I have to do is wait and see if it the gunk returns. Then I'll now if the wood was to blame. Fingers Crossed.

Well, that's a lovely looking tank! Is the grey stuff still gone? Did cleaning the whole thing do the trick? Mine has less now, but it's definitely still there. Hard to get off the sand without sucking up sand too.

Yes cleaning the tank and removing the wood did the trick. My plants look healthier and seem to improved a lot as far as new growth goes after taking that piece out. Plus it gave everyone more room to swim around so they seem a lot more active. I'm starting to see just a little brown (could be green i can barely see it) stuff on the sides of the glass and heater, but I'm assuming that's normal. I'll just do a wipe down this weekend. I'm waiting on my co2 kit to come in and maybe it will get rid of that.
