Common name/s: South American Bumblebee Catfish
Scientific name: microglanis iheringi
Origin: South America
Maximimum size: 3"
Temperature range: 72-77 degrees F
ph Range: 6-7.5
Diet: Omnivore
Description: The South American Bumblebee Catfish is a tropical fish native to the waters of South America. It is a nocturnal catfish whose colors bear a resemblance to a bumblebee hence it's name.
Care: A bumblebee catfish requires a tank size of 5 gallons or more and the tank should be densely planted with lots of hiding places as this fish will get stressed if the tank is not setup properly. Bumblebee catfish will eat nearly any prepared food but a favorite seems to be frozen bloodworms. These catfish should be fed after the tank lights are off as they are nocturnal and will be more willing to eat at this time.
Personal Experience: I have one bumblebee catfish in a heavily planted 5 gallon tank. I have found that they are more comfortable with swimming around during the day if the tank is densely planted and has lots of hiding places. He is almost max size and eats a varied diet consisting of pellets, flakes, and bloodworms.
Additional comments: Bumblebee catfish will eat anything that will fit in their mouths so small fish/inverts may be in danger of being eaten.
