i was given 5 strombus snails. i was reading and heard that these guys multiply rapidly. i was wondering how fast do they reproduce and will i need extra shells in my tank ? thanks
Snail grow their own shell, so you will not need any extra shells in your tank. The only time you would need extra shells is for hermit crabs as they grow. They steal the shells from other hermits and snails when they need a bigger home.
I do not know anything about the growth rate and reproduction of strombus snails though. Hopefully someone else can chime in about that.
It appears to depend at least partly on your water conditions and seasonal changes. Every fall a 30g tank I have with strombus snails from www.ipsf.com lay a large amount of egg sacs on the glass. Other than there there are a few constant egg sacs somewhere. They have been self sustaining for the 4-5 years of the tank's existance.
