175 MH probe or pulse start

I picked up a dual 175 watt dual Hamilton light system at a mom and pop thrift store a while back. When I tested it would start up but after a few minutes it would shut down. After closer inspection I found the system was probe start and the lamps were pulse start. So now I have 2 10000K Hamilton pulse start lamps and I wonder is there any way to tell how long they were used and if running them on a probe start system could have damaged them. Not bad for $50.00.
