I can possibly get a ebo-jager that is rated at 250 watts. Is this to big for my 55? Can I have to much of a good thing

That is fine for a 55g. The heater will only be on for as long as need to raise the temp to a set point. The main problem with a big heater in a little tank is that if the heater goes bad and sticks ON, it can fry your fish.
