My room in the winter can get to low to mid 50F.

Would a 100 watt heater be good for a 10g tank? Or should I use only a 50 watt heater for the tank??

I would like to keep the temp of the water at around 76-78F.

The general rule is 3 to 5 watts per gallon. This is for a normal indoor temps. Low 50's is pretty cold. I would bump up the normal 50watt for this size tank and go with a 75 or 100 watt.

yeah since it gets to 50's id go for the 75 or 100. if you keep your house 60-75 the 50 will do.
