What do u recommend for a fifty five gallon fowlr potentially a reef later?

Its on a college students budget.

I am looking for a flow rate as well.

My set up is a fifty five gallon fowlr fifty three pounds of live rock with a 20 gallon long for the sump. No overflow or sump set up yet. That's the reason for the sump. I will have a small fuge with LR rubble and some chaeto. I am clueless as to where to begin setting this up. The will be some return pressure maybe four feet worth if that.

So hold my hand on this journey. ;)

I'm not sure how many gallons an hour that your overflow can handle, but I would recommend going as big as possible. I would run a Rio hyperflow 26hf. On the return line, plumb in a relief line with a valve going back into some part of the sump, that way you can control flow (if needed). On my 90 gallon tank, I run a 26hf, a 20hf, and a 12hf all going into the tank. The more the better, but I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong (someone always does).
