I have live sand about 90 lbs of it for my bottom layer the 120 lbs of fluorite brown and 100 lbs of eco complete black. What I did was mix all in then brought about 20 bunches of short hair grass. From there I buy 100 size 00 gel caps and add miracle gro http://www.miraclegro.com/smg/goprod/miracle-gro-continuous-release-plant-food/prod70290/ in the caps. I have a 125 gal tank so I popped about 60 caps deep in the substrate about 2 inches apart. Then I add my hair grass before I added the water. Assuming you have water in your tank just be careful when planting your tanking with the tabs in it or stir the bottom cause you will release the dry ferts in your tank and kill all your fish. Just take your time and get the right tools for planting any tank. I also use once a week liquid ferts once a week and trace twice a week. I like secham but looking to find the right dry liquid ferts I can just add into my tank. I have Two ehiem classic 600 canister filters. In them I use phos zorb http://www.apifishcare.com/product.php?sectionid=1&catid=16&subcatid=90&id=721#.U8VHu6jD_qA and nitra zorb http://www.apifishcare.com/product.php?id=547#.U8VG_qjD_qA of carbon. I also use co2 about 15 bubbles per sec. Just for you to understand more bubble will lower your pH and acid level in the tank so depending what you putting in your tank you will want to monitor and adjust your levels as you see fit for your plants and most of all fish. My tank heat index is 85°f I am also using a wave point. http://www.wave-point.com/Lighting_folder/Fixture4LampMain.html and two fluval led lights. Anything else you want to know just ask.
