pair of dempseys?

Hello i have two dempseys in a fifty five that has anither dempsey and some other fish. Two of the three dempseys are teemed up and always chase people around and stay in a cave together and keepdigging a pit below it.together they make sure none comes closer. Could they be a pair? Or maybe just friends? Would two fish of the same sex do that? Our only male and females? Id lije to know so i can put them in there own tank
