I just set up an account on the AA iPod touch app. It shows up that I have a message - it has the little red number on the message tab - but it says I dont have access to private messages. Is this normal on the app?

Have you tried logging out, closing the app (as in, going in to the multitasking and closing it), then logging back in? If you haven't, try that. IF that doesn't work, well, just try that.
