my LFS sucks, it doesnt stock anything i need/want. is the only way buying it online?

i asked about java moss, and they dont carry it.
i asked about bio balls and they claimed to only carry them with plants attached to them or sold in this weird kit.

I'm not sure where you live or how big your town/city is... but here are ways I've found to get what I needed when the LFS was a less than appealing solution:

- posted on Kijiji or Craigslist with the type of fish I was looking for, and twice now local wholesale breeders were willing to sell me some stock "on the side"
- scrounged the internet, this site, and local aquarium clubs for info on Mom & Pop type fish stores
- looked for local sellers on eBay and Aquabid
- ordered online from sellers who were highly recommended
- bought/swapped with friends/aquaintances

Good luck!

Hi Momo,
Both my LFS suck too. It's Walmart & Petsmart, neither is a safe place to get stock. I have to drive 3 towns over, a 40 minute drive, to get to a great FS.
It's worth going the extra mile (s). They have great healthy stock in the store and if they don't have what I want they order it for me.
Since it comes with their weekly order I don't get stuck paying those ridiculous shipping charges. And they hold onto my fish for a while to make sure they are healthy and disease free.
I don't know where you live or your transportation situation, but look around at FS that aren't so local. You may get lucky like I did. Critter Cabana, the only place I get my fish, is family owned. They all love animals and they work with the local shelters to adopted their dogs and cats.
They are the only place around that has an Exotic animal license.
They even have local elementary schools do tours with the kids, so they can learn to care for all kinds of animals the right way.
They have even taken a couple of fish back for me. I had a killer Red Zebra male Cichlid. He had grown into a beautiful adult fish . But I started loosing the rest of the tank. Everyday I'd find 1-2 fish floating or just parts of them when I'd do a PWC. I didn't know what was happening, until I caught him in the act. In one swift move, he took out one of the female cichlids. I was devastated, and didn't know what to do. If I kept him he'd kill the entire tank. But I didn't want to knowingly pass a killer onto a friend. So I called my not so LFS and they took him the next morning.
It pays to look around, see who may be just one town away or two.
Your best bet is to stay away from any and all chain stores. They don't usually take very good care of their live stock.
Best of luck to you, I hope you can find a FS that works for you.

im near olympia washington, and thank you guys for the good advice. i have checked online for a local store thats family owned ect. but you know how some of those places can be. not well advertised. i had found one place... but ive seen very mixed reviews. they say the animals are taken care of, greatly, but the service sucks.

but alas it looks like ill be trying the craigs list idea, thank you.

You might want to check it out for yourself, if the reviews say the animals are well taken care of. It's really nice to get great service AND great animals, but IMO that doesn't always happen. I find I get the best service at those "iffy" places if I go well armed with research and know what I'm getting into.

Good luck with craigslist!

Agreed. My LFS had mixed reviews, some of the staff is helpful and some not so (says yes to everything). I go in knowing what I want or use my phone to research what they have (1 gets a bit PO'd, but so what it's my money. Right?) while I'm there and then make my purchase. Knowledge is power, so do research before you go and don't bee afraid ask questions.

Good luck!

Thanks again guys. i am going to try and check it out today. *fingers crossed*

it'd be great to open a AA fishstore, aha. it would be well profitable.

Hi Momo,
How far from the Washington-Oregon border is Olympia?
The reason I'm asking is that Critter Cabana in Newberg, Oregon where I've been going for years, has opened a new store up north, closer to the Washington border. I don't know where exactly but I can find out for you.
I would have called them first, but I have a severe case of laryngitis and I can't be heard over the phone. But I have to go see the doctor tomorrow and she's in Newberg, so I can ask in person.
If the new store is close enough, I'm sure you'd love both the service and how well they care for all their animals. They have a wide variety of fish and if they don't have what your looking for they will order it for you.
And if you get a fish and it doesn't work out for you, like the one I had that was killing all his tank mates. They will take it back and find a new home for it.
Critter Cabana is worth driving the extra mile for, they're awesome.
Of course Newberg would be to far, but the new store may be close enough for you to get to. If you'd like, I will ask them tomorrow how close the new store is to you.

Its okay wendi, that would be super nice but uneeded, im closer to canada then oregon:\

Shoot, that wouldn't work at all will it?
Well if they ever open a store in Northern Washington I'll let you know.
Good luck with finding what you need. I know it's not as easy as people think.

thanks for your time and effort, feel better!

Not a problem and thank you too. My 10 year old grandson, Casey, lives with me. And what ever bug is going around, he brings it home. He doesn't actually get sick himself, he just spreads it around. I'm sure as soon as I'm over this, he'll bring home something new.
Let me know how things go with your fish endeavors.
