Ok guys, just did a 10% change, let it run with a sponge in the filter, rinsed the filter, and dropped in some GFO... Wish me luck and hope I can get the phosphates under control!

Why are they high in the first place?? That's the key to getting them under control.

Because I was an idiot when I originally set up my tank and used tap water instead of RO/DI... Phosphates finally starting showing up a month later

Ah-ha.... What size tank & what's in it? Shouldn't be too much if it's only a month old.... Still cycling??

Here's everything;

55 gallon, 60 lbs caribsea Fiji pink, 40 lbs cultures fiji live rock..
Aqua clear 70, reef octopus bh1000...
3 power heads, koralia Evo 1400 and 550, and a nano 450...
Wave point HO T5, moonlight add on, and eheim 100w Jager heater...
Yes cycled. Maintain about 5-10 on nitrate reading, sometimes less.
Livestock: 2 mocha clowns, clown goby, lawn mower blenny, assorted snails and HC's...

I'm guessing you put the GFO in a mesh bag and placed it in your AC70? If so, remember to pull out the bag occasionally and roll it around a few times and/or a few light shakes. Since most GFO is angular, not spherical, the granules will self-compact (interlock) and at that point the water will just roll around it instead of through it (path of least resistance). GFO works great in a reactor that keeps it churning, but not quite as good just laying in a bag.....

Nice almost word for word what my LFS said this morning... It's good getting consistent info! :cool:
