I had a 6g saltwater tank with one clown fish and it suddenly died  All the levels were good except the nitrite which was a little high .5 do you think this was the cause of death? If not what could have caused it and how can I fix the problem?

Well first off a clown needs more than 6g. And yes the nitrite could have but why do you have nitrite to being with? Did you cycle first?

it was a percula clown and yes its cycled and nitrite was at 0 a day before. I'm very confused what could have caused this changed and how can i fix it now before the addition of more fish?

What are all your levels? And yes percula clowns recommended at 20-30 gallons. They need room.

Post your levels. Exact levels. Temp ph salinity ammonia nitrite nitrate. Also how many lbs live rock?

If you're showing any nitrites at all, you are not cycled......

+1. And I also agree a clown needs a bigger tank. I've seen clowns in a 5g at the lfs. They do this to draw attention. I won't last long.

I have to disagree about the nitrates comment. I have a tank that was 8 months old and nitrate showed up. We got it in control quickly. Nitrates an happen at any time not just when cycling.

I have to disagree with your disagree... (double negative) if you are talking about nitrites, a properly cycled tank will not have any due to the nitrifying bacteria. Everyone has some source of nitrates on the other hand.

I've got a black Ocellaris in a 6g fluval edge nano reef and he's perfectly happy with plenty room, been in there for months... Slight ich outbreak when he was new, but that cleared up in a couple days after a few garlic soaked feedings and hes been healthy and fine ever since. Tank mates are a green chromis and Wheelers goby..... Sorry yours died, but I doubt it was because of the tank size....

Why do you think your clown got ich?
Answer- stress.

Why do you think your clown was stressed?
Answer-tank size.

Tank size does matter. Tank size CAN kill a fish.

You will find out soon enough there are reason stocking like this does not work. You will develop further problems, stress is a major factor when keeping fish happy and healthy.

And exactly how soon is that? Ich is not just beholden to nano tanks, and that was months ago, with no recurrence whatsoever. My fish are not stressed so I'm not understanding your blanket assumption that I will have problems. I understand stocking levels, and it is indeed maxed in terms of fish but with careful feeding, the growth rates have been null. I maintain it extremely well and Its working for ME, which is what matters, and my fish are indeed healthy and happy, but thanks for your input....;)

Do you really want an explanation? This has nothing to do with it being a nano tank. I do not doubt it is well maintained but that is besides the point. Nitrates and phosphates will become a constant battle as the fish grow and get larger. Also aggression and territorial behavior will become worse.

Your stock is what id recommend for a 20g.

Im just informing, you have every right to dismiss my advice if you want to.

I cant really believe you when you say you know how to stock a tank, because having 3 fish in a 6 gallon tank is way overstocked...i cant even understand your viewpoint. Im sure your clown is stressed, no doubt about it. Ich is in your system and ince your fish become really stressed ich will come back, i hope you are ready. Your fish is not happy...
