Lighting for a 29 gallon tank?

LED's are a great option. I love my marine land double brights.

T5's are also good. They run hotter and you'll need to replace bulbs eventually. BUT they have different color bulbs to choose from.

It's preference IMHO.

I had both T5's and now LED's and I'll probably never go back to T5's.

If you want snails with African cichlids your only hope will be with Malaysian trumpet snails (MTS). Bottom feeders you can try loaches or synodontis.

No chance of a Pleco? Or some ivory snails or an apple snail?
 
Pleco will sometimes work its not guaranteed. But most of the time they work out. I haven't been able to keep any type of snail in mine

I will most likely be getting juvenile cichlids about an inch or so in length. Will that mean I can't grow them from young to be with snails?
