Leslies Pool Filter Sand Smell?

I washed my 50 pound bag of PFS and its in a bucket in my apartment with some water to cover it so it doesn't dry out. I heard the dust was bad for your respiratory system due to some chemical found in the sand. But when it's wet it's safe.

I slept in the same room as the wet sand last night and woke up to it hurting for me to take deep breaths . And when I smell the sand it smells funny . Like a pool or chlorine or something can't put my finder on it.


Does Anyone else have any ideas ?

I also did pour out the sand I my apt so their was dust this was before I know about the dangers and I washed it with my bare hands

And there is sand all over my apt floor from carrying it now unsafe if this really? I might just go buy play sand if I'm putting my health at risk!














So I can't use these Home Depot buckets for anything else because sand touched them?

You're not at any great health risks, I never even rinsed my PFS when I got it for my tanks. I got the stuff everywhere and no one go sick at all.

All the bag is stating is that silicate dust is a respiratory irritant. Open the windows and vacuum up the sand and everything will be peachy.

It says it can cause damage that won't show for years like Asbestos.... And shoot It got in my hardwood and walking over it had embedded it j to the ground my floor is speckled good thing the land lord is old and has poor vision !

I still don't get why it smells weird though ?

Any chance you could help my with what steps I should take for switching over to sand ?

You would literally have to sit there and breath silicate dust everyday for years on end before it poses a serious health risk. Just using it for a day or two before putting it in your tank isn't a big deal.

The smell could literally be from anything including the buckets you added the sand to. Just rinse it a couple more times if it overly concerns you.

That makes sense my chest hurting is probably because my AC UNIT is spitting out black stuff like mold and my landlord won't do anything about it

That's the more likely cause not the silicate dust.

What do you make of the chemical like smell I'm noticing coming from my sand ?

Did you treat the water you were using to clean the sand with anything? Water conditioner or dechlorinator? I know Prime has a noticeable odor to it.

Also, you said it kind of smelled like a swimming pool. Maybe part of what gives a swimming pool its distinctive smell is the filter sand.

No it was from a hose out side it shouldn't smell like chlorine my drinking water doesn't
