Finally got around to picking up the New Life Spectrum food for my goldies with our Petco gift card (the money back for a returned kitty condo) that everyone has recommended; I'm trying the small pellet formula, which looks like tiny distilled coffee beans...there has been good and bad feedback in terms of the fish "taking" to it...

The good news is that my ryukin, suffering from habitual and chronic swim bloat problems, has been doing better, swimming more upright and seemingly coming back to life -- and this is after one or two feedings! Conversely, however, the pellets seem to have made the fish a bit cuckoo, the Red Cap Oranda getting aggressive once again and chasing the other two fancies around the tank. I noticed this since changing their food from the flakes to the New Life Spectrum pellets...

LOL...I'll report back with more findings regarding this phenomenon and how the fish are doing on the new food...

Probably so, but we have experienced this kind of chasing and bullying in the past with him, which lead to the deaths of two other goldies that he ripped apart by nipping...

Still, this may have nothing to do with that; it just seems the pellets have made them go batty and it's probably due to what you say, Pixie...they are probably going nuts for them...though I noticed the way in which these pellets sink -- or don't sink in my case -- is kind of weird. It seems some of them remain on the surface of the water, doing away with the "benefits" of feeding pellets, and don't even sink...also, I notice that sometimes I don't even see the pellets for long after feeding them, and I'm concerned whether the fish eat them or if they're being thrown into the substrate or being sucked up by the filters...

I use 2mm Thera A pellets and 0.8mm surface feeder pellets. The surface feeder pellets only float if I sprinkle them close to the surface. The Thera A pellets sink slowly and the surface feeder pellets eventually sink due to the surface agitation. I like the food to be distributed throughout the tank so all my bottom feeders can scrummage for them. I sometimes give the Thera A to my comet, but they are really too small for him so they are just a treat.

I see; I didn't realize there were different "characteristics" to certain pellets -- these pellets that you feed are made by who?

Got-cha; wow, you buy these by the bucket? I tried a small container of the goldfish pellets to see how my guys would take to 'em; the ones I bought at my local Petco look like the smaller ones depicted in your right side photo...

Yeah, they are 80oz buckets (2.2kg in my language! lol)
It's just too expensive for me to buy in small quantities. I have a few big fish tanks, and am a serial over-feeder, sooo :hide:

Awww...that's mean, Pixie! Don't call him butt ugly! :fish2:

The pellets are very small -- almost granulated in texture; here's what they look like:

Seems the "small" formula is made up of 1mm variants...

I see; in my situation, I merely feed three fancies in a 60 gallon, so the smaller amounts and packages seem to work for us...

He really is beautiful, though; did he have those pimple-like formations when you first got him, or did they develop over time? Do you know what they are?

Any other pics of your tank with other fish in it?

I'm going to jump in sorry. I'm feeding the same small new life spectrum pellets Artesia and I put them in a small cup of water and swish them around till they all sink. Then just pour them in the tank. Right now I'm using pro gold from goldfish connection and those sink right away but I switch around. :)

Hello, Aml!

Why do you feel as though you have to apologize for joining the conversation? That's just silly! That's what we're all here for...:D (y)

That's a good idea, dropping them into a cup of water to swish them around; why do they not sink immediately upon entering the tank though?

BTW -- are you far from the prison facility (Lompoc)?

Sometimes I apologize for things I don't need to. :) Hi! I do live quite close to the prison (10 mins?), I hear it's famous although I had never heard of it before I moved here. Are you around the central coast?

I don't know why that food doesn't sink but my thought is that its so small and light that if they water doesn't cover it, it takes longer for the water to soak into it. I don't really know though! :) Sometimes I'll just take a pinch and hold it under water. That worked too, but if you need to give more than that it can be a pain!
