I don't know why I didn't ask about this sooner, but why does Petco have most or all of their plants in these cylinder tubes? I've wondered if this technique is new or for what reason companies do this to plants. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind it?

Easy to packageand transport so they don't have to spend money on a tank to keep them all in mabey. I know my local petsmart have both the vacumsealed and tube plants as where the petco next to it has those plus a tank with potted plants and plants attached to dw in it. Go figure.

Hello planted...

Apparently, some people are buying these. So, the store makes them available, but they aren't a good choice. I really like PetCo with the exception of these cheap plants. Most are land plants and won't grow under water. Some of the larger sword plants in the tubes are an exception, but I'd avoid the rest of them. PetCo does have other plants in their fish tanks that I think are very good, so get those instead.

I wouldn't jump to criticize Petco/ Petsmart. They are trying to accommodate to planted tank people. I'm not a fan of them because they can run LFS out of business, not because they sell bad plants. The plants that are not fully aquatic are labeled as "Semi Aquatic", but most are fully aquatic. I have bought A. Reineckii, P. Helferi, DHG, and Swords from them, all of which were good quality at a good price. 40+ crowns of Downoi for 8$?! That'a great.

Do your research and avoid the ones that are labeled "Semi Aquatic", and you will be satisfied.

Mine are exact same way

Hello Jk...

Sorry, I can't buy the idea that these chains are just trying to be accommodating. If these chains were working with everyone, they'd be selling true aquatic plants, like many of those they sell in their tanks. The plants in the tubes with the gel simply won't grow in the tank. I've tried them several times and with the exception of the swords, they don't last submerged in the tank water very long.

Don't get me wrong, I shop at PetCo regularly, but you have to be selective on the things you get there.

my petco has tubes of which only like half will actually grow underwater then they have planted tanks next to the frozen food with a bunch of pretty good plants i guess it just depends on the petco you go to

I have bought a Java Fern (tubed) from Petco and it is growing on a lava rock. Some of the Java Ferns are attaching, but I'm having troubling with the others.

I bought a tuber plant from them once it was labeled as an anubias bartieri and it ended up being a piece Lilly. And another one was an umbrella plant and was labeled as being fully aquatic. I haven't bought plants from them since. I've only bought from peabodys and people on here.
