If put together at a early age can you have a jack dempsey with a red devil?

The early age will not matter by itself. Most cichlids get meaner as they mature.

I've never owned a red devil, but other members on here have had some real psychos. Your success will depend on the tank size and a little bit of luck with your actual specimen.

What size tank are you working with?

Yep, It's called "flaring" in the fish world.

Isn't that gill flaring?

They flare both the fins and the gills. The gill flare is essentially them biting down (like a human baring their teeth).

sorry, not the fish of topic, but the firemouth flares big time =) his whole little red throat stuff comes out. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to scare my nasty little jewel...

This was during spawning when I got too close to the glass.

I can't wait for my fish to grow! =) he's pretty, and pretty mad lol Do females do this too?

I have a male JD and he is aggressive. He rules the tank over my male Green Terror. Only really beat the GT up once though. He will chase it every day but there has been no fighting since the GT got its *** kicked.

But they can hold their own against some bad fish to I'm guessing?

Oh oky doky thought they had the name jack dempsey for a reason.

JD's are very aggressive. They can be kept with other cichilids BUT you have to watch them and IF fighting occurs remove one. Personally, I'd only keep JD's with JD's or a Red Devil.

Very Aggressive? Compared to what, a platy or a molly? They are not pushovers, but calling them very aggressive makes me think you haven't exactly been around the block when it comes to SA/CA.
