So my wife hit a fish sale at a semi-local pet store today looking for a female angel :) found one thats supposed to be female and I'll get pics of it soon (this makes 2 new angels today, but ones tiny and in a grow out tank)...

BUT

she also brought home "HER" fish, and I have no idea what type it is, just that she got a gold fish, I think, going by photos that its a veil tail? can anyone ID this for me a little better? she does have a twin tail that doesn't show well in the pic. and does the 1 fish = 30 gallon fit?..how fast do they grow? as the only tank I have open for it is a 10 I was going to use for a QT tank

With fancies I tend to do 30g for one, and then +10g for each additional.

I don't have a lot of experience with fancies but she looks like what is sold as a standard 'fancy goldfish' in my area, also labeled as a fantail. I love the color on the eye :)

She looks like a pure one too. Once I bought a fantail that was sold as just that, but it ended up being some bizarre hybrid of fantail and oranda I think. It has the body/head shape of your typical fantail but then it has a quasi-wen on it.

It looks like a typical fantail goldfish. If you have any questions in respect to their care, please ask! :)

LOL I'm asking, only goldfish I have ever bought were feeders and we know how those are taken care of. Its stuck in a 10gal for now, course its small and has the whole tank to itself so I have a little time to find a bigger tank(she didn't bank on GIVING me an excuse to get more tanks HA)...

no heater so its at room temp in the bedroom (slightly cooler than the rest of the house) and I've warned her about over feeding and to place the food in the down draft of the filter so the goldfish isn't gulping air.....and told her she can share her romaine with it... anything else we should know?

Looks like a fantail. Dont just put it in a down draft of the filter. Either buy sinking food or mix the flakes with water so they sink. Swim bladder really sucks!!! Ideally each goldfish should have a minimum of 15 gallons. Example: at most 4 in a 55 gallon tank. Ideally 3. Don't put small gravel in the bottom. Fish may eat it and get it stuck inside. Sand or large stones or bare bottom is better. Get much more than necessary filtration. I have 550 gallons per hour or approx a 130 gallon filter on my 55 but id recommend at least a 20 gallon higher filter than the tank size since goldfish are messy. You will also need an air pump and air stone. Goldfish LOVE light too. Get a light and leave it on for 10 hours a day. Keep tank at room temp. Feed on a schedule small amounts 2 - 5 times a day like grazing. Feed about 1% of the fish's body weight a day. Peas will help with keeping the digestive tract clear. Boil and feed without shells. Ask me if you want more info? Hope this helps.

And also- will be able to tell gender after 6 months. A better picture would help me id more though. Very nice fish however! How much did she pay if you don't mind me asking... 5-14 is probably a fantail. 30's is a fancy / oranda with no wen or cross, or another fancy type.
Sorry if i stated anything you already know. I don't know whats new to you or not.

Oh oh oh! Also charcoal in the filter is not the best. I would get koi clay for an all the time filter.

Also, you dont need a heater for a goldfish. They prefer colder water

Yes it is "just fine" but not the best for goldfish.

Where did you hear that from?

Edit*

Carbon a.k.a. charcoal removes medicines from a tank. It also removes ammonia which beneficial bactera need but the goldfish had such a huge bioload its not affected. The carbon doesn't last forever. Most people dont use carbon at all. It is also good for water clarity. Carbon is a goldfish tank is perfectly fine.

as I said its all new to me, just the bits I've found looking them up since she brought it home (NOW she says she wants one or two more so its not lonely *rolls eyes*)... she paid like 5.50 at half off so about 11?..course they are over priced and only reason she went was its their half off yearly anniversary.
would a 40gl breeder tank work for a pair at full size? I would guess a wider tank is better than a tall one for them as they look thick and chunky.
I'll try to get a better photo of it, it hasn't slowed down enough yet as I was trying to get one last night in the tank and they all came out fuzzy, poor things look like they work so hard to move an inch when my angels just flick their tails and zoom across my 45 tall tank LOL

No a 40b is too small. Id go with atleast a 60g and carbon filter is perfectly fine for a goldfish. For 2 I would buy 2 biowheel 450s just because of the bioload

Charcoal in any fw tank is debatable. A healthy, cycled tank with a well established bio-filter simply does not need it and it simply becomes an unnecessary expense. In the event it's necessary to remove meds, odors or discolorations, fresh charcoal does wonders.

In respect to goldfish tips, info and care, the article below is a good general guide. :)

Yes a 40 is great for 2! Goldfish are sooo friendly they love company. Mine even eat out of my hands and chew on me while i clean their tank. :).

Like you said, wider is better. Particularly for younger and smaller goldfish that aren't fully developed. I just bought a ranchu goldfish ($100) and the breeder only keeps her 3" ones in 10" of water but huge tanks. See how the fish copes with water levels. The breeder told me a 2" is good in 8" of water and gradually increase as it goes. I don't know how generally true this is for all goldfish but i am quoting her. However she did say it might be ok in my mostly full 55 gallon.

P.s. for great goldfish advice you should also ask at kokosgoldfish.com people there know tons about goldfish.

P.s.s. glad someone agrees about carbon! And maybe great about a 40 gallon isn't true nut i swear it is at least OK for two goldfish'
