Hello all. I have decided to do my first saltwater nano tank. As I am new to the salt side I have no idead where to start. I have a 10gal aquarium w/ a 20gal aqueon filter, standard LED lights and a heater. Other then that I would appreciate any and all help. Looking at around the 1st to start setting up so I have plenty of time to read and ask ?'s. Also what kind of fish? Should I start out with live rock and fish then graduate to coral? How much sand? Do I need a power head or current fan? Is my filter good enough? Do I need a skimmer?

Yes. You would need a power head. You would also need a better light as the standered LEDs will only grow algae. I have a par38 from reef koi and it grows everything I have put in there

You can start out with live rock or dry rock. The only difference is with dry rock you will need to add a ammonia source to get the BB started in the tank so the cycle may take longer.

Sand wise, I put in about 15 pounds of live sand in my 10 gallon and it worked out really well. Skimmer you will not need at this time, power head as 10gal said is a big yes.

As far as filter, imho, it will depend on what you are planning on stocking the tank with. On mine I had one rated for 50-70 gallons per hour and it has kept the water crystal clear...but my 10g is over stocked right now lol.

I nust want like 2 fish and some shrimpies and eventually some coral just to get a feel for salt that way if I like it I can tear down my 60gal fresh and turn it into a salt

I'd like to give you a big welcome to the hobby. Just remember this, patience means time, but with time will come success in your tank. You will have problems and there will be times where your tank is just outright amazing, but you MUST put in the effort.

Both 10g_Nano and Dave are great success stories of what you can accomplish in this hobby, in small tanks in small time.
I remember when both of them joined, both as clueless as the next, but the one thing that led them to success is that they were willing to learn.

Now, for your questions.
You will need a powerhead. I would recommend 2- Koralia 240's for Softies and LPS and just really good outright flow. Or 1- 240 and 1- 420 For SPS too.
As stated, stock light will not support any corals unfortunately. A par38 bulb is usually your best bet when it come to 10g tanks. One from: Reef Koi, Coral Compulsion, or Rapid LED will all do good.
In a 10g you are generally limited to 2 fish in the tank. Though it varies, as say the Bioload of 2 Neon Gobies, is none compared to that of a shrimp goby and a possum wrasse. There are also plenty of shrimp you can keep in the tank, so I wouldn't worry about that. Check out liveaquaria.com for fish stocking suggestions.
Live rock, Dry Rock, Macro Rock, whatever is fine. You'll want just around 10lbs. However I keep 20 in my 10g, just for more biological filtration.
Here is a link to a Sand Bed Calculator so you can figure out how much sand you will need for the depth you are looking for. Again, live or dry sand does not make a difference.
Corals really aren't as hard as they seem. So starting off with them, would be good. As long as you keep up with your water changes, you should be okay.
Your filter is perfectly fine, don't worry about that.
Generally skimmers aren't needed on small tanks like this.
Again welcome to the salt side of things, and ask away.

That's good. I started with a firefish and a Yellow Watchman Goby and they worked great. Plus corals, hermits snails and some sexy shrimp.

WARNING! This can be addictive  I have already setup a bigger tank and waiting to transfer my live stock over......MAJOR ADDICTIVE saltwater is hahaha.

Awesome thanks its greatly appreciated. I got everything except live rock powerhead and refractometer. Also whats a good cheap coral light? Im on a budget and not trying to grow anything spectacular

For a 10g a Par38 bulb is your best bet. Look at Reef Koi, Coral Compulsion, and Rapid LED. They will run you from $60-$100. You will also need a hanging fixture, but a cheap architects lamp from Walmart or Target will do, it's about $7.

Ok everyone tank is set up. Power head . Heater. Filter live sand and 11 lbs of live rock. Should I leave the light off during cycling or turn it in. About how long of a cycle.

Heres a pic

What light are you going to get?

I ordered a par38 bulb. Just gotta get a fixture. And wait for it to get here

But for the lights I have now just regular white leds

So should I run these regular leds during cycle or no?

Ok. And should I add a source of ammonia or no since I have live everything?

I wouldn't think so but I am no pro either lol. The die off from the live rock should be sufficient to feed the ammonia and start the cycle going.

If I am wrong I know someone with more experience will jump in :)
