Okay, 12" cube it is then. Have you tried running a sponge filter before? I've been using one for several months in my shrimp tank. It works, but when the bubbles break at the surface, it slashes droplets everywhere within its vicinity. So maybe you should get a glass top cut to size for it if you go that route.

I run the sponge filter so slow that the bubbles on top barely disturbs the surface. Keep in mind my water has indian almond leaves that increase viscosity and they really don't need dissolved O2.

I haven't discarded the all inclusive tank yet...

As I am reading more about all inclusive options, this Marineland curvy glass might be a better solution for an office space.

All my concerns about filtration system being too strong can be handled with zip ties and sponges.

So within the next 24 hours I'll make the decision.

Next: substrate. I am quite familiar with Amazonia Aquasoil, but do I really need to go there?

After some visits to Petco, the Marineland all-in-one has a height that the LEDs will shoot straight to my face.

I also discarded the possibility of using my 12x12 cubes from Mr. Aqua. I have a house project for them in the near future.

So I have until the end of the day to make the final selection if anybody can bring some last minute contribution, please do so.

I looked online a bit and the first results that come up are mostly quite expensive. I'm talking $200+ for the tank alone. Aside from a 15 gallon column i cant really think of much that isn't ridiculously expensive.

Just so we can educate our eyes, can you link some of these high end $200+ options? Thank you.

Sure. The ones that were $200+ were actually 20+ gallons, too big for an office tank. The rest of them are still pricey:

You can always replace the light on the marineland. I've read reviews and some have done just that. But let's see here.. other options. How about a fluval spec 5? Like have it start at that spot you have allocated for a tank, but it will of course be a little longer so it would come down the side of your desk a bit. It would pair nicely with a Current Satellite LED+.

I am strongly considering a AquaTop Nano-Sky Complete Aquarium System (the 4G version). It comes with a glass cover, a filter that will surely work with a pathetic swimmer (i.e., betta splendens) and I can always upgrade the light with one of my Finnex (or whatever is the written version of that for a plural).

Good links Brian. 10000K Skkye Light?

Something like this, I have a phone call at 3:00pm, and then I'll refine my options.

WoW...I am sold on the light.

Is there anything similar to the Satellite LED + that would fit the Innovative Marine 4 Gallon Pico?

If the answer is yes, I am getting the pico. If the answer is no, I am getting the Edge 5.

PS: For Sale: Printer on the right hand side of my desk. D:

The smallest the Sat+ comes in is 18". However, the newer and also more powerful Ecoxotic E-Series comes in 12". You can control color and intensity (dimmable) so you can keep it low light for now, and in the future have high light if you want. Also has RGB LEDs, automatic moonlight, ramp timer for gradual sunset/sunrise, etc.

I have a 10% off code if you want it. Just need to find a 12" tank option if you like the light.

So maybe the Marineland Contour tank because it's about 12" long with the extra height and the E-Series combo.

I read you can reduce the flow by lowering the flow adjustment + adding some filter floss to the outflow return.. Maybe stuff some in there?

I just had an idea. If you get the marineland tank + e-Series, you can use the stock light as an elegant way to suspend the e-Series over the tank! Like somehow secure the e-Series, maybe with velco or zip ties to the stock light bar. Then just run the wire along the arm and zip tie those so they'd be hard to see. I think this would look sweet!

Edit: Oops! Scratch this idea for the work desk. I forgot it may get in your eyes while working. But hey, if you ever move again or transfer this tank, you'll be able to implement this idea at a later time, perhaps. :)

The problem is that at 16"+ and about 4"+ away from the glass, the light will be directly on my face.

Yeah, I just remembered. Check my edit to the previous post. For now, you can sit the light on the tank and reduce the power of the light.

the marineland is 12"x12"x12", has a lid and is all-in-one. It would take the Exoerotic LED that you linked (for that price, better be!). Would be nice to have something thinner (12"x6"x8"?) but I guess we can't expect to have something perfect for every need.

Yeah it's pricey, but it'll be overkill in terms of power for the application now. But it would be justifiable if you see potential down the road, in case you ever re-purpose it. But if not, you have to weigh the pros and cons and do research to see if it's what you'd like.

Did you say there's a printer on the right side of the desk that will no longer be there? Will it allow you to shift the monitors to the right and give you more real estate for a longer tank? If so, there are some 18" long options that would allow for an 18" long satellite LED+.
