ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1407889639.120977.jpg just wondering if anyone has seen or used an internal overflow like this. I am new to the hobby and it looked like an easy diy overflow to do

Looks like about a 1" to 1 1/4 inch pipe with a 1/4" to 3/8" cut down the middle Attached to a bulkhead on both ends.

No it's just a pic I got off a old forum on another site. This is all the info I could really get off the forum. Quote from forum

"The overflow is made from 1" pipe so I would say it can handle about 400 gph safely. I am using and eheim 1250 and after headloss I'm guessing I flow about 200 gph through there and can see that it could definitely handle twice as much. You can use 1.5" pipe or even 2" pipe if you want and reduce it down to 1" at the elbows because each drain only needs to handle 1/2 of that flow.

I cut the slit using a dremel it's about 3/16" wide. If you look at the picture you can see that it has plenty of room for water to flow into. I could not be happier with the functionality of this easy DIY job. Once you see yours in action you'll see what I mean."

He also said it was really quiet. The only thing I would do different is cut 1/4" cuts every 1/4" about 3/4" deep to skim a lil more surface area. I'm new to the hobby so I didn't know if this was a good idea.

I was wondering because I was just getting ready to do a diy overflow for my tank 46 gal fowlr with 2 -3/4" bulkhead overflows into a 20 gal long sump. It looks like you would eliminate any chance for fish getting into your overflow. Don't know about snails tho, I'm not an expert

My main like for this kind of overflow is I don't really care for the ugly boxes that are mounted to the side of the tank and my tank will also be viewable from the front and back( I'm putting it in a wall) so I just wast it as clean looking as possible

I would do slits in the pipe instead of one long open cut. That would be safer for small critters so they don't get sucked in. Other than that, it looks like a good idea

So airgoose, do you think 1/4" is too big, and I should go 1/8" every 1/8", 3/4" deep? I've been thinking about that.

Here is my prototypeImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1408299168.711302.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1408299602.986650.jpg I ended up going 1/8" every 1/8" by 1/2" deep

Looks good. Just be sure to keep it clean so algae doesn't clog it up. That's a pretty good idea and might try it with a tank that I got.

Awesome thanks, hope it works well for the both of us!! Only thing that I'm kinda thinking is, that there won't be much static pressure on the water going to the sump. Mabey it's nothing to be worried about. Guess we'll find out.

I tested my overflow this last weekend and got 300 gph thru it. My skimmer is rated for up to 325 so I'm real close. I decided to use 1/4" cuts 1/2" deep and it worked better than 1/8" every 1/8". It didn't flow more gph it just seemed to skim better. Overall I'm pretty happy. Definitely was cheaper and easier than making one out of acrylic.ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1409013901.145718.jpg

Yes, it has a plug in the middle of the overflow so if I have a restriction I will know what side it's on. It flows about 300 gph. My tank is viewable from both sides so I had to do something different.
