hello! so i had a strange question :) i have two of these little one gallon bowls lying around, i got them for free for my bettas (obviously way too small but i felt bad not accepting, lol) ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1427420074.818770.jpg
so i was wondering if there was anything cool to do with them, like plant-wise? if anyone had an idea of what i could put in here, because they're obviously too small for fish, but i hate having empty tanks lying around. i was either thinking of doing aquatic plants or just turning it into a terrarium, haha, thanks in advance for any advice! :)

also, many people on another forum suggested red cherry shrimp with some plants. my room stays at 75°, like, all of the time, so they said a heater isn't necessary. however, i've been getting mixed responses on if they need a filter. i don't even know if they make sponge filters for that size of a tank is the problem, and i also didn't really want to put a filter in the tank at all. this is not because i don't want to give proper care to the things in the bowl, but because i had wanted something simple that requires very little maintenance and costs. if this is the case, i will steer clear of the shrimp and whatever else requires a filter, so no need to worry about me giving improper care to them! :)

Java Fern, Anubias, Bamboo.

Pretty much any plant haha

Also, you could get an incredibly small sponge filter.

Cherry shrimp are fine at room temp. I keep mind at room temp which is about 68

okay thanks! so wait, do they actually need a filter though? or could they live happily without one if i did frequent water changes?

They should be fine with water changes. The trick would be feeding them just teeny weeny drop of food

Shrimp bowls usually are packed with fast growing plants. No filter would be needed and the feeding of shrimp pellets or quarter algae tabs every other day would be suitable. Cucumber and other blanched vegies do well.

ohh i see. so one more thing, kind of confused. how would i do water changes if i had like plants in there? because since it is a small bowl, i can't really like spill everything out i guess..? thanks!

For the water changes, use a turkey baster, it makes things soo much easier

I put this little bowl together one evening. Wish I had measured it first but I'd guess 10-12oz maybe?

It had a small bit of organic potting soil topped with Tahitian Moon Sand, bit of dwarf sag and moneywort planted, and dwarf baby tears floating. I also put in that piece from a marimo ball since my shrimp love those things.

Planting takes patience, especially if you have hands larger than a 6 year old

Theresa I love the shrimp bowl you made! My question is how do you maintain it and what do you feed?

Oh thanks! I only kept that going for a week or so, mainly as an experiment. For things like this though I keep a close eye on water temp, do water changes with a 100ml syringe, and feed minimally every other day.
