Haha too true Brookster. I once asked in a thread if people could gather any information about fish health from their plants to which you replied "I don't think so, everything I do to keep the plants alive is **** near killing my fish" well there are ways to achieve that balance between healthy fish and plants without dosing anything. Walstad man.

Shoot. Half the stuff I come in contact with at work should land me in the ground or a cushy law suit... bury me with the ram tank please:)

Youd make great fertilizer... I also bet the rams would make a nice home in their new skull decoration

To each their own :)

Btw I'm going to be starting a small Walstad style tank very shortly. Just need to find a good spot for it and a decent low light fixture but I am really excited to finally try this out. I hope it doesn't become annoying but I have been reading lots so I'm hoping I can make this work. I might do a thread. I feel the planted section would benefit from a sticky in this method since all the stickies are geared towards high tech. Not saying my thread in particular but there are many good articles out there.

I don't know if my point has been driven home. I don't know how it has become acceptable to expose fish to a chemical that can cause respiratory problems in humans.

In one thread we are talking about ethics, tank sizes, compatibilities water parameters clean water then in the next breath we put this stuff in our tanks. I'm not having a go. Just made me giggle.

Same reason I don't ask for a worldwide ban on corn because my child is allergic to it. Or why I feed my fish stuff I wouldn't eat myself. It's not a black and white world.

Well. You all are getting very entertaining!

Thanks for the ideas. I should have been more clear; the issue is when I have my arms in the tank for maintenance. I can mitigate not spilling it on me while dosing but not when I'm "wading".

I can manage a DIY setup, especially since I won't have to change the other routines (thanks Mebbid). Do I also not have to worry about watching ph, drop checkers, etc with the DIY (I presume it puts out less co2 than other systems)?

A friend does have a co2 setup I could have. Unsure how complete it is. He got it with a 40 gallon breeder setup and some high power light, I'm just not up for a ton of plant growth.

I have read Walstads book and a lot of the "response" to her theories on Barr Report.

I'd like to go with the method you find sort of buried on this page ... A little bit of a few dry ferts (it's not EI or PPS or whatever), and the "and with excel you can double the fert dose". http://www.barrreport.com/forum/barr-report/articles-aa/487-non-co2-methods/page6

I have swords I really like that just can't deal without a carbon supplement.

But some of this does follow a line of thought I'll introduce on another thread ...

I have a set of those gloves. They work well it you're moving medium to large objects or scraping algae off glass, but I'm not able to do things that require a finer touch like planting and pruning. I even have trouble with using my long planting tweezers.

I think the reason I'm not worried about using a chemical with the potential to cause problems with human respiratory systems in my fish tank is because my fish do not have human respiratory systems... or even lungs that could be potentially be irritated by the chemical. Since many many people, who DO care about there fishes' well being, have been using this product for many many years without report of negative side effects for their pets, I'm going to go ahead a keep feeling confident in my continued use of it.

Thanks! And I agree ... I'm sometimes pretty loony about chemicals but I wouldn't discourage anyone from using glut type products based on my experience. I'm sensitive enough to certain chemicals I can't have a haircut in a regular salon or use most bottled soaps and shampoos (even natural and organic) because of a certain group of chemicals.

I will note that I got excel in my eye once and it was awful. I make sure to look away when I'm pouring the glut in my tank now.
