Just to follow up, I did another test last night before a water change and nitrites were 0. So looks like the instant cycle did work, just needed a couple of days to establish. I did a 25% water change anyway. All of my new additions are showing great colour, very active and eating well ?

Thanks for the response. So no need to panic? I'm thinking 25% water change every other day until there is no nitrite reading. What do you think?

Just my two cents worth - I have black Tahitian moon sand in my 125 gallon Malawi cichlid tank and whilst I love the look, I don't think it brings out the colours of my fish as much as a lighter substrate.

I had an empty 55 gal tank so decided to use it to quarantine 5 new peacock cichlids.
I cleaned the canister filter in tank water from my display tank (it had been running on the empty tank for about 4 weeks since I re-homed my daughter's goldfish). I filled the tank and added a sponge filter...
You can isolate her to reduce her stress but some say that she may spit with the stress of being moved. I always leave my holding girls in the main tank which may explain why I am yet to have any surviving fry :(
I believe that it takes a couple of goes before they will generally hold to term...
Yes she is - you can tell when they're not eating and have the "pouch" under the chin. They usually show some interest at feeding time without actually eating. Congrats ?
I've already done a 75% change and she's looking pretty perky ?
No idea as to what caused it. Not overstocked (3 fancies in 55g), I do regular water changes and nitrates under 20ppm at all times and feed them veges daily.
The only change is that I (stupidly) put some ornaments with sharp points...
Well I struck it out with Pimafix for the full 7 days and I think there's some improvement. The left eye still looks pretty bad and I'm wondering if she might be blind in that eye but the right eye is quite clear and the blister-like covering is starting to reduce.
Water params were good -...
Ok so Day 4 of Pimafix and her eyes appeared to be clearing up but have come home today to find her left eye appears to have "popped" and there is bloody tissue hanging out ?
Not sure where to go from here. Big water changes??? Carbon to remove meds??? Or is this a part of the healing process...
Another 12 hours and she's continuing to improve although I'm not entirely confident that the Pimafix will cure her but rather is just alleviating the symptoms. Playing the waiting and watching game .....
Things are looking up! Both eyes are still protruding but are slightly clearer and less blood. Sylvia is perky, eating and swimming well and overall appears to be more comfortable.
I gave the 2nd dose of Pimafix this morning and will continue to update on her progress.
