    I have a thin layer of what looks like brown algae growing in my tank, its on the rocks and will accumulate on any rough surface that has a reasonable amount of flow on it. I thought it was cyano but its really not red and there is plenty of flow in the tank so I think that might be in incorrect...

    That seems like it will work, but it's not really a "deal" IMO and you dont know what you are getting. Check out odyssea lights, they are cheap and are relatively well known.

Unless they are explicitly labeled "reef-ready" or you can get a model number and figure out some specs on them, i wouldn't chance it.
