How To Catch A Fish In My Tank

Tony, great anecdote! Serendipity in action . . .

    Just A Basic Lighting Question

No, not at all. "Full light spectrum" is a variable, depending upon the light source. For example, the spectrum of an incandescent bulb is markedly different from that of a metal halide. The peak output of a light source is indicated by the Kelvin temperature of the source. A higher Kelvin...

    Bad Plant?

I've had real good luck with swords that are sold in those plastic tubes, but have heard that a lot of the other varieties are not true aquatics.

    miracle grow?

Plus, plant food/tabs for terrestrial plants usually has relatively high concentrations of nitrogen compounds. For example, liquid Miracle-Gro is nearly 10% urea nitrogen. It won't take much to get you up to toxic levels in your aquarium.

New leadership, gone are RSS feeds?

I agree - loved the RSS feeds and would love to have them back. Configured them right into my personalized Google space.

    Why can't I grow vals?

I've had the same problem with Vals and with dwarf sag as well. My water is similar, with high Kh (~9). Only difference is I have a water softener in-line, yielding pretty much 0 Gh. Wisteria, java fern, anubis, swords all do well, but after trying corkscrew val 3x, I gave it up.

    Lighting upgrade - any advice

I currently have a 55 gallon tank, planted (wisteria, anubias, echnidorus, anacharis) and doing pretty well. My situation being what it is, I bought a pretty inexpensive hood when setting up, with a single fluorescent, ~40w. Though I'm fairly happy with my current planting, I'd like to push...

need some ideas - looking for small school for 30 gall tall

Serpae tetra could fill out the middle region, and their orange-red would provide a nice contraxt with the black angel.

    super glue

Also, don't use it anywhere where a water-tight sweal is needed. It will be impervious where applied, but isn't meant to be applied over 100% of the surfaces being joined, and so may leave microgaps between the surfaces. That and its inability to maintain a seal when even slightly flexed could...

    New Creamsicle Molly babies!

If you're just setting up the 10g and plan to seed it as you said, why not be really aggressive with a temperature treatment; say 90-92 degrees for a couple of weeks. I don't think that will necessarily kill off any of the nitrobacter or other beneficial organisms, but it should take its toll...

If it looks like it's real and not a background, you've got what you want . . . don't yell at the camera!

If that's after onjly 4-5 days of recovery, that's pretty impressive!

Acute evaporation = partial water changes?

Agree with all of the above - fact is, the more evaporation you have, the more build-up of dissolved solids you'll get. You could make a case that, with more evaporation, you'll need more/larger partial water changes, not less.

    Gestational Periods....

"Rebreed" isn't even the whole story - they have specialized body tissues/organelles that store the male sperm after they breed. The stored sperm can trigger 5-6 additional broods in your female, even if she never sees another male.

    Gestational Periods....

Platys, Mollies and Swords have a gestation period of 28-34 days.
