    lighting questions again!

Thanks for your reply. The tank is 5' long and 24" deep so I think I should be ok with those lights. Like I said it'll be a while before I even think about adding in some of the easier things to start with. Then later on when I know more I can add in some metal halides if I decide to add some...

    lighting questions again!

I'm still trying to decide on a lighting system for a 120gallon tank. I saw a kit that has 4 140 watt VHO bulbs for what seems like a reasonable price. http://www.aquariumlight.com So I have a few questions on this: 1. Is 520 watts or 4.6 watts per gallon considered 'moderate' lighting? I'm...

    would like opinions on lighting

Ah yes, electronic ballasts. hellolights.com has that custom build option, it would be about $150 more to upgrade to the electronic ballasts. Would it be worth that much more to upgrade? Any opinions on the 20k 175w halide/140w VHO vs 10k 250w halide/96w PC? Thanks.

    would like opinions on lighting

I'm trying to decide on some lighting for a 125 gallon tank. It's dimensions are 60"w by 18"d x 24"h. I'm very new at this and lighting has me very confused. I'm only going to start out with fish and live rock but taking the advice of others, I'd like to purchase a lighting system that I can...

New setup (yup, another new guy!)

That's good news about the lights! I think I'm about ready to start buying and do the intial setup and cycling and still have a month or so to do more research on a proper lighting system. Thanks!

New setup (yup, another new guy!)

I personally am in no hurry, but I've had the tank for 3-4 weeks now and its just sitting there, wrapped in plastic. The kids are the one's I'm feeling pressure from to get it going. Everyday I hear "can we buy fish now?"! My original plan was to get that Orbit fixture and build a...

New setup (yup, another new guy!)

One other thing, loganj, you mentioned budget. I'm willing to go around $1500 - $2000, not counting fish or a tank, I already have that. It's already been cleared with my wife, hell, she bought me the tank in the first place. So now that I have it, it has to be used right! Thanks again.

New setup (yup, another new guy!)

Thanks for the advice. I'm not opposed to DIY if I know what I'm doing, I'm building the stand myself, now that I've finished putting in new wood flooring. But for some things because of time and knowledge, I'd just as soon buy it. I'm not rich by any means but I'm sure as I gain more experience...

New setup (yup, another new guy!)

I've been researching equipment for a 125 gallon acrylic tank and wanted to run by the experts here on what I'm thinking about getting. I've already read The Conscientous Marine Aquarist and the New Marine Aquarium by Michael Paletta. The stand I'm building is almost done so I think I'm ready to...

Great deal on ebay or not?

I'm in the process of researching some equipment for a 125 gallon tank. I have no experience in saltwater at all, but I was looking at pretty much the same filter as legends92. The filter I was interested in is a Pro Clear Aquatics 200. (I think Pro Clear Aquatics and Aqua Clear Aquatics are...

New 125 gallon, what to do?

Thanks everyone for your advice. I know there's so many possibilities with this size tank and I've decided what I'm going to do. Now I know some of you might not agree with this, considering my level of experience, but I'm going saltwater! Yes thats right, I'm jumping from a 4 month old 20g...

New 125 gallon, what to do?

Oh and how could I forget the gourami! We do have a gold gourami, and thats my favorite fish so far. gouramies get to be a fairly good size don't they? A bunch of them would work out well in a big tank, wouldn't they?

New 125 gallon, what to do?

wow, thanks for the advice. It is a nice dilemma isn't it! It's nice to read that Discus aren't that sensitive as I've heard. They sure are beautiful fish. I took a look at a pic of rummynose tetra, those are very cool looking as well. I think they would look very nice with the discus. I'll...

New 125 gallon, what to do?

Hello everyone, new guy here. I was wondering if I could get some help picking some compatible fish for a new aquarium. Forgive me if this is a little long but let me give you some background first. We currently have a 20 gallon tank for about 4 months now. It's seems to be doing great...
