It's mouth appears to have a reddish streak on each side, and has gotten a little worse since yesterday. I do not have a hospital tank, but I've dosed my whole tank with melefix a year or so ago without any issue. Would you recommend that?

Limestone will raise you hardness and Ph. Some other stones such as hematite will add harmful iron to your water. Slate is perfectly fine. You can use concrete, but it mostly contains limestone so you'll have to monitor that type of thing. I often use river stones that come in a bag from Home...

I used pricilla tetras to cycle my first tank, then filter media after that. I wasn't good at my first attempt at cycling, and those poor fish probably should've died a few times. They even survived an ich outbreak that killed everything else in the tank...
It looks like black hair algae to me. Most "algae eaters" only eat a couple kinds of algae, and black hair algae is rarely eaten by "algae eaters", the exception is the siamese algae eater. They eat the most wide variety of algae, including black hair.
