    pH Assistance

Apparently our city water has a very high pH. I have used API Proper pH in the past to regulate it to 7.2, however, over a period of 2-3 water changes the pH sky rockets again. I have no real way of knowing just how high it is, because it just shows up as the bluest of blues on the color card...

    goldfish show off.

:thanks: I've had him since he was about 1 1/2" long, coming up on four years now. I had a situation when he was about a year old where I had to change his water basically every night for about a month. He grew so much it was crazy!! He has the most friendly "fishonality" you could imagine...

Haven't bought any yet...I didn't want to buy the wrong stuff and didn't have time to research elsewhere last night. Parent's 55th anniversary party tonight and planning has me pretty preoccupied :) The local store didn't have the coarse, only fine and medium. I'm putting one BIG Oranda in...

    Gravel v's sand??? New tank...

Boadams, is all black diamond sand "created equal"? Lol! After researching and looking at pics and video, we've decided to go with it. Found it at Tractor Supply store, just want to make sure there aren't different grades or types, etc. Also, how deep should I have it? I soooo want to get...

    Gravel v's sand??? New tank...

Thanks Atxpunx...sounds lovely, but hubby and I honeymooned in Jamaica and I'm trying to replicate the beautiful sandy beach...complete with sand, a palm tree, two little red beach chairs and a thatch hut. Can hardly wait...although...I hope I don't spend too much time gazing at the new...

    Gravel v's sand??? New tank...

Boadams, per jlk's advice, I'm going with pfs. jlk, the strip I have will be attached to the bottom using suction cups. Not using the sand/pebbles for weight, I was just referring to the sand being "blown" off the strip thereby exposing it... I am so excited and glad you two responded...I...

JLK, thanks for the advice and good thoughts and, boadams, can't believe I didn't even think of that !!! Brilliant :thumb: Quck update and a couple questions...sold the hex, bought a 27 gallon cube. Will be running the Aquaclear 110 with the current AC 40 I'm using in the 10...

    Gravel v's sand??? New tank...

Hi JLK and thanks for your kind reply. Now I have another question for you because I ran in to a filter problem!! I bought an Aqua Clear 110 because I want as much filtration as I can get with this big guy (plus after he's settled, I'm thinking of adding a new little Oranda to keep him...

    Gravel v's sand??? New tank...

I have only been at this hobby a couple years and have learned a lot from you all, thanks :) My beautiful Oranda has horribly outgrown his 10 gallon aquarium and I'm preparing to move him into a 45 gallon Hex. My biggest question is this, what are the pro's and con's of using gravel v's sand...

    ? re: Ammonia Poisoning

As I have previously admitted with my held down in shame, some of my fish suffered amonia poison when I was first getting started and didn't know what I was doing. Amazingly, they all survived and are seemingly normal and active swimmers. My questions are this: will the redness ever totally...
