what kind of benefits if any does this that have. i do a pwc once a week and am going to start adding to lake salt to the tank and i know that thats the pcw do more good than anything but thought i might give this stuff a try.

yeah the Bala Sharks do like softer water with a lower ph. from what i just goggled. you could do cichlids they would love that water! you could try adding drift wood also but that only lowers it a small amount. or mixing reverse osmosis with tap water which can get pricey and requires some...

when you say off the chart are you using test strips? because i was using them the alkalinity was always off the chart and the test strip seemed a little high when reading ph also. if you can get an api master kit that will let you know what your dealing with better and depending on the fish...
these all sound like good ideas i used rinsed them shook out some of the water then let them air dry. i would be worried that paper towel might leave some paper behind and that might affect the ph reading or something.
that stuff does leave a nasty oily film on glass and it might eat away at a acrylic seems like i saw some used on Plexiglas glass once did not end well as recall.
goo-gone would be that last resort.imo
i am still very new at this also but what is the temp of you water? are you using a heater? you may not of got by with out a heater in the 10 gallon but not the 40 do to the larger surface area.
