My cichlids really enjoy rearranging the gravel in my tank. Sand is sometimes a pain when it comes to filtration if the fish are digging it up. I don't think it would be a huge problem if you tried sand though.

The brown algae spreads very quickly. It really likes porous things. The peroxide should kill it. I suspect the high pH is what's allowing it to spread so quickly. Water changes should help.
